Gartner, the world's leading IT research and advisory company, has placed Sun in their Magic Quadrant for Web Access Management (WAM), 2H07 (2nd quarter 2007).
This is a privileged position that is only awarded to companies that demonstrate innovative products, strong year-on-year growth, ability to execute and completeness of vision. Gartner acknowledged the appeal to customers of Sun's Java System Access Manager, stating that one of its major benefits is the pricing strategy, which includes free download tools and subscription pricing. This gives businesses the advantage of not having to meet the upfront cost of licenses.
Of Sun, Gartner says the company offers a full-featured product with built-in federation, SOA capabilities and Web services security functions. Further, Gartner notes the appeal to many of its clients of the Java System Access Manager's pricing strategies, which include free download of tools and subscription pricing. Enterprises can thereby begin deploying Java System Access Manager without significant outlays for upfront licensing.
Jim McHugh, Sun's VP for software infrastructure, agrees, saying, "Sun has strong identity management solutions. For example, Sun Java System Access Manager offers a complete set of features, flexible pricing to our customers, and the ability to quickly and securely extend business capability by making internal and partner resources available to the enterprise through federated single sign-on (SSO)."

Gartner continues its analysis, remarking that Sun concentrates on creation of simple deployment scenarios, which reduce the complexity of initial deployments.
There are a couple of cautions in Gartner's praise, however. These include reference to Sun's lack of a base of business applications or an ITSM/SIEM focus that could be leveraged to sell identity management tools. The end result, Gartner predicts, could limit Sun's competitive position vis-a-vis larger platform vendors. Also, Gartner notes Sun's lack of support for ADFS/WS-Federation in its federation tools.
For its part, Sun, with customers such as BC Hydro, the Business Industry Political Action Committee (BIPAC), the Government of Norway, and Insurance Corporation of British Columbia, through its Sun Java System Access Manager, offers key features that make it the first and most complete identity-based solution for managing authentication and authorization on the Web, Java, federated, and Web services environments. Key features include: Web SSO, federated SSO, and Web services security. Scalable to hundreds of millions of users, Sun Java System Access Manager makes it easier to deliver online access without compromising security.
Sun Java System Access Manager is a key component of Sun's identity management portfolio, which includes Sun Java System Identity Manager, Sun Java System Federation Manager, and Sun Java System Directory Server Enterprise Edition. In addition to today's announcement, Sun's identity management portfolio has also received other industry awards and recognition. Earlier this year, Gartner positioned Sun in the leaders quadrant in its Magic Quadrant for User Provisioning(2) and Information Security Magazine named Sun Java System Identity Manager 7.0 a "Hot Pick"(3).
